Vanguard CEO Firm on Anti-Bitcoin ETF Stance Despite Market Pressure

Tim Buckley, the outgoing CEO of Vanguard Group, reaffirms his skepticism towards Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), despite growing interest from customers and the introduction of such products by competitors. In a stance that highlights Vanguard’s conservative approach to investment products, Buckley articulates concerns about Bitcoin’s volatility and its appropriateness for long-term retirement portfolios.

Bitcoin’s Volatility and Investment Viability Questioned

Buckley’s caution stems from Bitcoin’s speculative nature and its questionable role as a store of value, particularly highlighted by its performance during the stock market downturn in 2022. Despite reaching record highs in recent years, Bitcoin’s significant drop in value raises doubts about its reliability and stability as an investment asset, according to Buckley.

Vanguard’s Position Amidst SEC Approvals

The decision to steer clear of Bitcoin ETFs comes in the wake of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs. While competitors may see this as an opportunity, Vanguard has explicitly stated its intention to avoid offering Bitcoin ETFs or related crypto products, prioritizing asset classes that align with the company’s investment philosophy.

Customer Feedback and Market Movements

Despite the firm’s stance, feedback from Vanguard’s customer base, including prominent figures in the crypto industry, indicates a desire for access to Bitcoin ETFs within their investment portfolios. Some customers, disagreeing with Vanguard’s position, have opted to transfer their investments to firms like Fidelity, which has been approved to offer spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Vanguard’s Indirect Exposure to Bitcoin

This detail underscores the complexities of the investment landscape, where companies may have indirect connections to assets
