Trump Unveils $500 Billion AI Infrastructure Project ‘Stargate’

Published:

President Donald Trump has announced Stargate, a $500 billion private-led initiative to build artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure across the United States. The ambitious project will be led by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, with key technology partnerships from Microsoft, Nvidia, and Arm.

Stargate’s Vision and Initial Investment

At a January 21 press conference, Trump revealed that Stargate’s initial funding of $100 billion will be deployed immediately, with the remaining $400 billion planned over the next four years. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and Oracle CTO Larry Ellison joined Trump, highlighting the project’s goal of creating over 100,000 American jobs.

“What we want to do is keep AI innovation in this country,” Trump stated, emphasizing the need to maintain a competitive edge over nations like China. Trump added that emergency declarations may be used to expedite Stargate’s implementation.

Early Progress and Applications

OpenAI disclosed that Oracle’s Abilene, Texas facility is already under development as the first Stargate data center, with additional sites being evaluated for future expansion. Ellison emphasized the project’s potential to transform various industries, particularly healthcare, through advanced AI applications like improving electronic health records and personalized healthcare plans.

The Stargate initiative builds on OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft, which utilizes Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing to support AI operations.

National and Strategic Implications

OpenAI stated that Stargate will contribute to the re-industrialization of the United States while enhancing national security for America and its allies. The initiative aims to position the U.S. as a global leader in AI development and innovation.

“This project will enable creative people to figure out how to use AI to elevate humanity,” OpenAI stated, adding that Stargate will push advancements toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).

SoftBank’s Son suggested the project could pave the way for Artificial Superintelligence, which he said would address challenges previously thought unsolvable by humanity.

Stargate’s launch comes nearly a year after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared his vision of raising $7 trillion to accelerate chip production, signaling the growing demand for AI infrastructure.

Key Partners and Highlights:
