Sweden Demands Over $90M in Back Taxes

Published:

The Swedish Tax Agency has issued a demand for over $90 million in unpaid taxes from crypto mining companies, following a detailed investigation into their tax filings and business operations from 2020 to 2023. This move highlights the government’s increased scrutiny of the crypto sector’s tax compliance.

Investigation Reveals Widespread Tax Avoidance

The inquiry involved 21 crypto mining firms and uncovered that 18 of these companies had presented “misleading or incomplete” data to exploit tax incentives. The investigation focused on the avoidance of value-added tax (VAT) on taxable operations, dodging import taxes on mining equipment, and evading income tax on the profits derived from mining activities. The Swedish Tax Agency outlined that these practices resulted in substantial tax losses for the country, including incorrect VAT payments and unreported cryptocurrency assets.

The total back taxes owed by these firms amount to approximately 990 million Swedish krona ($90 million), which includes 932 million krona ($85.4 million) in unpaid VAT and additional tax surcharges of about 57.9 million krona ($5.3 million). Despite appeals from the crypto mining companies, the administrative court upheld the agency’s demands for the majority, adjusting the figures based on specific verdicts for two firms.

Impact on Local Industry Growth

In a positive turn for the sector, Hive Digital Technologies, a major player in crypto mining, announced the acquisition of a new commercial property and data center in Boden, Sweden. This expansion underscores Hive’s commitment to enhancing its operations and adhering to sustainable practices and energy efficiency. The new facility, powered by “green” energy, will accommodate the next generation of ASIC servers and is expected to boost the company’s Bitcoin production.

This crackdown by the Swedish authorities serves as a critical reminder for the crypto industry about the importance of transparent and compliant business practices, especially as the sector continues to mature and attract more institutional attention.
