Sony Launches Soneium Blockchain to Attract Web3 Developers

Published:

Sony Block Solutions Labs, a joint venture between Sony Group and Singapore-based Startale Labs, has unveiled its new Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain, “Soneium.” This blockchain aims to attract developers from diverse sectors such as entertainment, gaming, and finance, seeking to build innovative Web3 applications.

Strategic Partnership and Testnet Launch

In collaboration with Astar Network, Soneium’s testnet will soon be introduced, showcasing Sony’s commitment to exploring and integrating Web3 technologies. Jun Watanabe, chairman of Sony Block Solutions Labs, emphasized the initiative’s goal of creating diverse business opportunities and new use cases that leverage Web3 technology to reach a wide audience.

To enhance Soneium’s functionality, Sony has partnered with leading Web3 companies like Optimism, Circle, Alchemy, The Graph, and Chainlink. These collaborations are expected to refine the blockchain’s capabilities and provide developers with essential tools to navigate global regulations, ensuring that their applications are compliant across different regions.

Expanding Sony’s Web3 Vision

Soneium is positioned as part of Sony Group’s broader Web3 strategy. According to Sota Watanabe, director of Sony Block Solution Labs, the company plans to leverage its extensive distribution channels and user base to drive mainstream adoption of Web3 technologies. The initiative will not only support existing Web3 services but also explore the creation of new applications that align with Sony Group’s business interests.

Sony’s Broader Web3 Endeavors

Sony Group has been proactive in embracing Web3 technologies. Notably, its video game division filed a patent in March 2023 for adopting non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to allow the transfer and use of digital assets between game platforms. This move aims to provide gamers with enhanced opportunities related to their in-game assets.

Additionally, Japan, where Sony is headquartered, has been actively supporting the Web3 ecosystem. The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry has been encouraging strategic investments into Web3 startups by allowing limited partnership firms to acquire and hold crypto assets, further solidifying the country’s role in the global Web3 landscape.
