Semler Scientific Adds Another $10 Million in Bitcoin to Its Treasury

Semler Scientific is deepening its bet on Bitcoin, expanding its holdings as part of a strategy to boost shareholder value through cryptocurrency exposure.

Semler Scientific’s Bitcoin Strategy Gains Momentum

On April 25, Semler Scientific announced it had purchased an additional $10 million worth of Bitcoin since February 14. The healthcare technology company acquired 111 Bitcoin at an average price of about $90,000 per coin. In total, Semler now holds more than 3,300 Bitcoin, valued at roughly $300 million.

The company’s growing Bitcoin reserves have increased its Bitcoin yield by 23.5% year-to-date. Bitcoin yield reflects the amount of Bitcoin held relative to outstanding shares, offering investors greater exposure per share.

Semler emphasized that it uses Bitcoin yield as a key performance indicator to gauge the success of its Bitcoin acquisition strategy. The company noted that its entire Bitcoin treasury was secured at an average price of nearly $89,000 per coin. As of April 25, Bitcoin is trading around $95,000.

Financing the Bitcoin Expansion

To fund its Bitcoin purchases, Semler partially relied on issuing about $125 million in new stock. Additionally, the company announced plans in January to raise $75 million through a private offering of convertible senior notes.

Despite being a healthcare company primarily focused on developing diagnostic products for chronic disease detection, Semler has significantly diversified its balance sheet with digital assets.

Bitcoin Treasuries: A Growing Corporate Trend

Semler is not alone in its Bitcoin buying spree. In 2024, Bitcoin’s rising price fueled major gains for companies heavily invested in the asset. Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), led by Michael Saylor, saw its stock price soar more than 350%, inspiring other firms like Semler to follow suit.

As of April 25, public companies collectively hold around $71 billion worth of Bitcoin. Strategy remains the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, boasting a treasury exceeding $50 billion. Earlier in April, Strategy added 6,556 Bitcoin at an average price of $84,785 per coin.

Meanwhile, institutional Bitcoin holdings are even larger within exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which now hold approximately $110 billion worth of Bitcoin, according to Coinglass.
