Scottish School Becomes UK’s First to Accept Bitcoin for Tuition

Published:

Lomond School in Scotland will start accepting Bitcoin for tuition payments in the Autumn semester of 2025, marking a historic first for educational institutions in the United Kingdom. The move reflects a broader trend of Bitcoin integration in academic settings worldwide.

Bitcoin Meets the Classroom: Curriculum and Payment Innovation

The school’s announcement stated that incorporating Bitcoin aligns with its mission to teach “sound money principles” inspired by the Austrian School of Economics. The goal is to better prepare students for an uncertain financial future by embedding real-world economic tools into their education.

Key highlights from the school’s approach include:

  • Tuition can be paid in Bitcoin starting Fall 2025.
  • BTC will be immediately converted to fiat currency.
  • The school is considering a BTC treasury in the future based on community feedback.
  • Only Bitcoin is accepted—no other cryptocurrencies are involved.

Lomond School emphasized Bitcoin’s inclusive nature, especially for people in developing countries with limited access to traditional banking. The school views BTC as an excellent educational tool that spans economics, computing, ethics, and innovation.

Growing Trend: Bitcoin and Education

Bitcoin is steadily finding its place in educational institutions around the globe. Beyond payment systems, many schools are integrating Bitcoin into their curricula and financial strategies.

Here are a few notable examples:

  • University of Cincinnati added crypto-focused courses in 2022.
  • Mi Primer Bitcoin, a grassroots initiative in El Salvador, partnered with the Ministry of Education in 2023 to introduce Bitcoin lessons in schools.
  • University of Wyoming launched the Bitcoin Research Institute in July 2024 to produce academic studies on digital assets.
  • University of Austin allocated $5 million of its $200 million endowment to Bitcoin in February 2025.

Chun Lai, the university’s chief investment officer, said the endowment fund sought exposure to Bitcoin to benefit from the asset’s financial upside as crypto adoption grows across institutions.

As more educational entities embrace Bitcoin, whether for instruction or investment, it’s clear the digital currency is becoming a legitimate player in shaping the future of learning.
