Saudi Arabia celebrated its founding day by unveiling a new cultural metaverse, aiming to showcase and preserve its rich heritage. The project, named Cultural Universe, was introduced by the Ministry of Culture and marks a significant step in the nation’s cultural endeavors.
Metaverse Development and Features
The Cultural Universe, developed by droppGroup’s Generative Media Intelligence (GMI) system, utilizes Oracle’s Hyperledger Fabric 2.5 blockchain technology. It offers users an immersive experience, guiding them through Saudi Arabia’s history dating back to 1727. Using a first-person shooter (FPS) approach, users can freely navigate the virtual world and explore various aspects of Saudi culture.
Interactive Exploration
As users traverse the metaverse, they encounter virtual representations of historical events, triggering detailed audio explanations in Arabic. However, English audio support is currently unavailable. The platform covers diverse sectors, including music, art, history, food, and crafts, providing a comprehensive exploration of Saudi heritage. Additionally, mini video games add to the interactive experience.
Accessibility and Compatibility
The Cultural Universe is accessible across multiple platforms, including websites, mobile devices, and virtual reality (VR) headsets. Its cross-platform compatibility aligns with the Ministry of Culture’s commitment to inclusivity, allowing a global audience to engage with Saudi culture.
Vision and Economic Implications
The Ministry of Culture views the metaverse initiative as a cultural revolution, emphasizing its role in preserving heritage and fostering contemporary artistic expression. Samuel Huber, CEO of LandVault, notes that Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries are transitioning from the “era of hype” to leveraging the metaverse for economic growth. Governments in the region are increasingly investing in digital infrastructure to create vibrant economies for their citizens. Huber identifies the metaverse as a key component alongside blockchain and AI in driving economic development in the Middle East.
