Polygon zkEVM Experiences Downtime Due to Sequencer Issue

Published:

Polygon’s zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM), a crucial component for scaling Ethereum, has faced unexpected downtime. The issue, identified with the blockchain sequencer, has sparked discussions within the crypto community on social media platforms like X.

Downtime Details and Polygon’s Response

Polygon clarified to its two million followers that the downtime specifically affects the zkEVM and does not impact other chains developed using the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK). The zkEVM, which is unique in being a rollup solution, operates differently from Polygon’s Proof of Stake (PoS) system and other chains utilizing the CDK.

The root of the problem lies within the blockchain sequencer, a vital mechanism that organizes and groups transactions into batches. These batches are then processed by the Polygon zkEVM smart contract on Ethereum’s Layer 1 (L1). Polygon has committed to resolving the issue promptly and plans to issue a detailed “post-mortem” report to shed light on the incident once it is resolved.

Community Reactions

The prolonged downtime, which lasted over 10 hours, raised concerns among users on X, with notable accounts questioning the lack of widespread discussion about the issue. One user, 0xngmi, expressed surprise over the silence regarding the downtime, while another, Mirza.inj, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the lack of attention the downtime had received despite its duration.

zkEVM’s Role in Scaling Ethereum

Launched in March 2023 in mainnet beta, the zkEVM aims to enhance Ethereum’s scalability by enabling developers to deploy smart contracts more efficiently, with increased finality and lower costs. Cointelegraph noted upon its release that the zkEVM closely replicates the transaction execution environment of Ethereum’s mainnet. By leveraging transaction batching, the zkEVM promises to significantly improve the performance of decentralized applications (DApps).

As Polygon works towards resolving the sequencer issue, the crypto community eagerly awaits further updates and the comprehensive analysis of the incident, hopeful for the quick restoration of zkEVM services and continued progress in Ethereum scalability efforts.
