The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in Nigeria is urging the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the country’s security framework to bolster effectiveness and global standing in the digital sphere.
Meeting Between NITDA and NISS
In a meeting held with the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), NITDA’s director-general, Kashifu Inuwa, emphasized the potential benefits of incorporating AI into security operations. This discussion aimed to explore ways in which technology, particularly AI and the Internet of Things (IoT), can enhance security measures.
Emphasis on Partnerships
Inuwa highlighted NITDA’s commitment to forming strategic partnerships, aligning with their Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0). These partnerships are crucial for leveraging technology to address security challenges effectively.
AI’s Role in Advancement
Inuwa clarified misconceptions surrounding AI, emphasizing its role as a transformative force worldwide. He highlighted AI’s ability to streamline tasks, provide rapid responses, and offer innovative solutions.
The NISS expressed eagerness to learn from NITDA’s experiences to inform policy development. The institute aims to deliver an executive brief to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, focusing on policy formulation and implementation based on insights gained from NITDA.
NITDA’s Initiatives in AI Development
NITDA is actively fostering AI growth in Nigeria through initiatives such as the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the National Artificial Intelligence Policy.
The Nigerian government has announced grants for AI-focused startups and researchers as part of the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme. This initiative aims to harness AI’s potential to drive economic progress.
