Metaplanet Finalizes Deal to Launch Bitcoin Magazine Japan

Published:

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet Inc. has secured an exclusive licensing deal with BTC Media Inc., allowing it to launch Bitcoin Magazine Japan, a local version of the prominent crypto media outlet. The announcement comes just six months after Metaplanet began investing in Bitcoin, marking a significant move into the crypto media industry.

Details of the Deal

Metaplanet confirmed on November 25 that the licensing agreement with BTC Media, a subsidiary of BTC Inc., is complete. The full rollout of Bitcoin Magazine Japan is expected in the first quarter of 2025.

  • Strategic Timing: The agreement was initially signed in July, with UTXO Management, BTC Inc.’s venture capital arm, investing in Metaplanet to support the project.
  • Market Focus: Metaplanet highlighted Japan’s importance in global finance and technology, stating its goal to connect financial institutions, regulators, and the Bitcoin community through Bitcoin Magazine Japan.

Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Investments

Metaplanet’s pivot toward cryptocurrency earlier this year has been a game-changer.

  • Bitcoin Holdings: Since April, the firm has acquired 1,142 BTC for approximately $74 million (11.372 billion yen). With Bitcoin trading at $97,600, the investment is now worth $111.5 million.
  • Stock Performance: Metaplanet’s stock has surged 1,550% in 2024, though shares dipped 3% to $17.11 (2,630 yen) on November 25 during midday trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Challenges in the Crypto Media Market

Bitcoin Magazine, launched in 2012, is one of the oldest crypto publications. However, it faces stiff competition in the global and Japanese markets.

  • Global Rankings: Bitcoin Magazine drew 1.27 million visits between August and October, lagging behind competitors like Decrypt (3.8 million), The Block (3.2 million), and CoinDesk (over 12 million), according to Similarweb.
  • Local Competition: Bitcoin Magazine Japan will compete with Japanese-language crypto media from established Western outlets like CoinDesk and homegrown platforms such as CoinPost.

The Road Ahead

Metaplanet’s entry into crypto media aligns with its broader strategy of Bitcoin adoption and promotion in Japan. The firm’s financial and strategic moves could position Bitcoin Magazine Japan as a key player in the evolving crypto landscape.

While the specifics of the licensing deal remain undisclosed, the collaboration highlights growing opportunities in the crypto media space. Bitcoin Magazine Japan’s launch in early 2025 could signal a new phase for Bitcoin awareness and adoption in one of the world’s most influential financial markets.
