Judge Refers Craig Wright’s Case to CPS for Potential Perjury Charges

Published:

Craig Wright, who claims to be Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, is now facing potential perjury charges. Judge Mellor has indicated in court documents that he plans to refer the case to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The CPS is considering these charges based on evidence presented by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA).

Background of the Case

COPA, a nonprofit organization representing Bitcoin developers, sued Wright in 2021. They aimed to prevent him from claiming copyright over the Bitcoin whitepaper and from suing Bitcoin developers while posing as Nakamoto. COPA, supported by influential figures like Twitter’s Jack Dorsey and cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, sought a clear ruling that Wright was not Nakamoto.

In March, Judge James Mellor ruled that Wright was not Nakamoto. By May, Mellor accused Wright of lying extensively during the hearing, recommending that UK authorities consider prosecuting Wright for perjury. This recommendation was formally documented today.

Implications for Wright and Associates

Judge Mellor indicated that the CPS would decide whether to prosecute Wright for alleged perjury and forgery. They will consider issuing a warrant for his arrest or pursuing extradition proceedings, depending on his current location. Additionally, Mellor suggested that the CPS review the testimony of Stefan Matthews, one of Wright’s witnesses.

Mellor stated, “So far as Mr. Matthews is concerned, it is true, as COPA submitted, that he has been a major player in Dr. Wright’s campaign to establish himself as Satoshi for many years, and in that capacity, has been a significant supporter and purveyor of that lie.”

Broader Impact

This development marks a significant turn in the ongoing saga of Wright’s claims to be the enigmatic founder of Bitcoin. If the CPS decides to press charges, it could lead to severe legal consequences for Wright and potentially affect his standing in the cryptocurrency community. The case also underscores the legal and ethical challenges surrounding the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto and the ownership of foundational cryptocurrency documents.

Craig Wright’s claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto are under intense scrutiny as he faces potential perjury charges. Judge Mellor’s referral of the case to the CPS highlights the serious legal implications of Wright’s assertions. As the CPS reviews the evidence, the outcome of this case could have far-reaching consequences for Wright and the broader cryptocurrency landscape.
