Galaxy Digital Set to Launch Crypto ETPs in Europe

Published:

Galaxy Digital, the digital asset financial services company led by Michael Novogratz, is gearing up to introduce cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs) in Europe within weeks. This move follows the company’s partnership with asset manager DWS last year, aiming to make digital asset investments accessible to Europeans via traditional brokerage accounts.

Partnering for Accessibility

The collaboration between Galaxy Digital and DWS is set to culminate in the launch of new ETPs, designed to bridge the gap between traditional finance and the burgeoning world of digital assets. Leon Marshall, the CEO of Galaxy Digital’s European operations, announced the imminent launch at the Blockworks’ Digital Asset Summit 2024 in London, marking a significant step forward in bringing cryptocurrencies to a broader investor base in Europe.

Understanding ETPs

Exchange-traded products, encompassing exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and exchange-traded notes (ETNs), are investment products that trade on stock exchanges. ETPs offer investors exposure to various asset classes, including digital assets like cryptocurrencies, in a format that is familiar and accessible through conventional investment accounts.

Regulatory Landscape

The push to introduce crypto ETPs in Europe comes as the region’s regulatory environment begins to open up to digital asset investment products. The U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) recently indicated its openness to approving ETNs, albeit restricted to institutional investors for the time being. This regulatory development aligns with the broader trend of integrating digital assets into traditional financial markets, as evidenced by the U.S.’s recent listing of its first spot bitcoin ETFs, including one listed by Galaxy in partnership with Invesco.

Expanding Access to Digital Assets

Galaxy Digital’s initiative to launch ETPs in Europe represents a significant effort to demystify and democratize access to cryptocurrency investments. By offering these products through traditional brokerage accounts, Galaxy and DWS aim to lower the barriers to entry for investors interested in digital assets but seeking the security and familiarity of established financial platforms. This development reflects the growing integration of cryptocurrencies into mainstream investment strategies and the continued evolution of the digital asset landscape.
