Former FTX Europe Chief Acquires Titanic Gold Watch for Record $1.5M

Published:

John Jacob Astor IV, an American tycoon and one of the wealthiest passengers on the Titanic, met his tragic end when the ship sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. Rescuers found Astor’s body with several valuable items, including a 14-karat gold pocket watch. This collection also comprised gold and diamond cufflinks, a diamond ring, and a gold pencil, marking it as a repository of both monetary and historical value.

Gruhn’s Vision for the Watch

Patrick Gruhn plans to showcase the gold watch not merely as a personal collectible but as a historical artifact in museums. He funded this acquisition with the proceeds from selling his companies. Gruhn emphasizes that his interest in purchasing the watch stems from a commitment to preserve and share a significant piece of history, not to indulge in luxury.

Background Amid Controversies

This acquisition emerges amidst the controversies of the FTX bankruptcy, in which Gruhn and other leaders of FTX Europe were implicated. After the bankruptcy, the FTX estate aimed to recoup over $323.5 million from its European managers, but a settlement later significantly reduced this claim. Gruhn has consistently stated his unawareness of any fraudulent activities at FTX prior to its downfall.

Since relocating to Oregon, Gruhn has taken charge of a German Catholic TV network and is exploring opportunities to launch a crypto derivatives exchange in Europe.

Patrick Gruhn’s purchase of the Titanic watch not only highlights its historic significance and the record-setting auction price but also reflects his complex career trajectory amidst the ongoing FTX controversy.
