Ditobanx and ICP Hub Mexico Promote Cryptocurrency

Published:

Salvadoran fintech company Ditobanx has partnered with the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) Hub Mexico to launch an initiative aimed at promoting the use of cryptocurrencies at Mexican universities. As part of this program, more than 4,000 students have received $5.42 (100 pesos) worth of Ckbtc, a cryptocurrency designed to mirror Bitcoin, for use on campus.

Boosting Cryptocurrency Adoption

The initiative, which targets students at Aguascalientes institutions, seeks to increase the adoption of cryptocurrency in Mexico. Ckbtc, a token built on the ICP blockchain, offers the security of Bitcoin along with the speed and efficiency of modern blockchain technology. According to the ICP website, Ckbtc is a multi-chain Bitcoin twin that can be transferred within two seconds and with minimal transaction fees.

Practical Use and Expansion Plans

As a practical introduction to cryptocurrencies, students can use their allocated Ckbtc at campus cafes, restaurants, and copy shops. The initiative aims to familiarize students with digital currencies while promoting financial inclusion. The program initially targets universities in Aguascalientes but plans to expand to other institutions in the Bajío region and Mexico City.

About Ckbtc

Ckbtc was launched on April 3, 2023, by the Dfinity Foundation. It is backed 1-to-1 by Bitcoin, which supporters argue makes it more secure than wrapped tokens. Ckbtc’s proponents highlight its suitability for decentralized commerce, emphasizing its fast transaction times and low costs, as well as its reduced reliance on third-party custodians.

This initiative represents a significant step towards integrating cryptocurrency into everyday transactions for students, potentially paving the way for broader adoption in Mexico.
