Cyber Thief Admits Stealing Millions Through Fake Coinbase Website

Published:

Chirag Tomar, an Indian citizen, has pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy related to creating a fake Coinbase website, leading to the theft of $9.5 million in cryptocurrency from hundreds of unsuspecting victims. Arrested at the Atlanta airport in December 2023, Tomar now faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

The Scheme Unfolded

Operating from June 2021 until his arrest in late 2023, Tomar, along with his accomplices, devised a scheme using a counterfeit version of the Coinbase Pro website. This website was designed meticulously to capture login credentials from Coinbase customers. Court documents indicate that at least 542 victims were defrauded, tricked into entering their sensitive information on the sham site.

Investigation and Evidence

The U.S. Secret Service played a pivotal role in identifying Tomar as a key player in this elaborate scam. The breakthrough came when it was discovered that Tomar had used an email address registered under his real name to coordinate with his co-conspirators. Further incriminating evidence included a spreadsheet maintained by Tomar, listing the details of the victims and the amounts stolen from them. Additionally, Tomar was implicated in sending stolen or fraudulently obtained identity documents to open accounts on Binance, another major cryptocurrency platform.

Lavish Lifestyle Funded by Fraud

The proceeds from his fraudulent activities funded an extravagant lifestyle for Tomar, including the purchase of luxury watches like Rolex and Audemars Piguet, high-end vehicles such as Lamborghinis and Porsches, and trips to glamorous destinations like London, Dubai, and Thailand. His internet search history revealed queries such as “fake coinbase page,” “coinbase scam,” and “how to take money from coinbase without OTP,” highlighting the premeditation behind his criminal actions.

Tomar has yet to receive his sentence, which underscores the gravity of cybercrimes and the severe repercussions they carry. This case also serves as a cautionary tale about the increasing sophistication of online fraud schemes and the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures among users and platforms alike.

As the legal process continues, the crypto community and potential online investors are reminded of the vigilance needed when navigating digital finance, especially when dealing with personal and financial information.
