In a significant crackdown on financial fraud, the Federal Police of Argentina, with assistance from Interpol, have apprehended a couple accused of orchestrating a massive Ponzi scheme that maneuvered over $400 million in cryptocurrency across Brazil. Operating under assumed identities, the duo was traced and captured after they entered Argentina, marking a pivotal moment in international law enforcement cooperation against cryptocurrency fraud.
Founders of Braiscompany Apprehended
Identified by Argentine local media as Antonio Inacio Da Silva Neto and Fabricia Farias Campos, the individuals are the alleged founders of Braiscompany. The company purported to “build financial freedom for thousands of people through information” but instead led a deceptive Ponzi scheme. Da Silva Neto was particularly sought after, with a red Interpol warrant issued in March 2023 for crimes against the Brazilian financial system, money laundering, and capital market offenses.
Severe Sentences Await
The gravity of their crimes is reflected in the severe sentences handed down in February, totaling more than 150 years of imprisonment combined. Da Silva Neto faces 88 years and 7 months, while Farias Campos has been sentenced to 61 years and 11 months. These sentences underline the serious nature of their fraudulent activities affecting numerous victims.
Extradition and International Collaboration
The capture followed an extensive investigation that pieced together the couple’s movements through various transactions made under their aliases in Argentina. Their arrest underscores the effectiveness of international cooperation in tackling cross-border financial crimes. Argentine authorities are now proceeding with the extradition process to return the accused to Brazil, where they will face their sentences.
Previous Extradition in Connection with Braiscompany
This arrest follows the extradition of another individual involved with Braiscompany from Argentina to Brazil in December. Suspected of acting as the financial operator for the company, this person’s role was crucial in mediating Braiscompany’s transactions with other entities, highlighting the extensive network involved in the scheme.
The arrest of these individuals sends a strong message against the use of cryptocurrencies for illicit activities, showcasing the vigilance and collaborative efforts of international law enforcement agencies in protecting financial systems and investors from sophisticated fraud schemes.
