Arbitrum’s Atlas Upgrade Activated: Paving the Way for Lower Gas Fees

Published:

Offchain Labs has successfully rolled out the “Atlas” upgrade, also known as ArbOS 20, on the Arbitrum network, marking a significant stride towards enhancing Ethereum’s efficiency and reducing transaction costs. This upgrade introduces Ethereum’s Dencun support through the implementation of blobs, aimed at streamlining data processing at substantially lower costs.

Key Features and Impacts of the Atlas Upgrade

  • L1 and L2 Fee Reductions

Atlas targets immediate reductions in layer 1 (L1) posting fees via EIP-4844 and anticipates further fee reductions on March 18. The upgrade is set to eliminate the L1 surplus fee per compressed byte, previously at 32 gwei, and decrease the layer 2 (L2) base fee from 0.1 gwei to 0.01 gwei. These adjustments will automatically benefit Arbitrum One applications and layer 3 Rollup chains without necessitating any modifications.

  • Enhanced Support and Security

In alignment with EVM security standards, the Atlas upgrade incorporates support for EIP-6780, setting the stage for future improvements to the EVM ecosystem. This enhancement not only boosts the security framework of Arbitrum but also extends its compatibility and potential for broader adoption across various blockchain applications.

  • Community and Ecosystem Support

Arbitrum RaaS (Rollups-as-a-Service) providers, including Altlayer, Caldera, Conduit, and Gelato, have pledged to upgrade their existing Orbit chains to accommodate the Atlas and Ethereum Dencun upgrades, ensuring a cohesive and efficient transition for users and developers alike.

Unlocking New Use Cases

The Atlas upgrade stands to significantly impact the Ethereum ecosystem by facilitating more cost-effective transactions. This development opens the door to a wide range of applications, particularly in sectors like gaming, SocialFi, and DeFi exchanges, which were previously hindered by high transaction costs.

Steven Goldfeder, CEO and Co-Founder of Offchain Labs, expressed enthusiasm for the upgrade, highlighting its alignment with the mission to scale Ethereum for broader usability. The Arbitrum DAO’s decision to adopt ArbOS Atlas is anticipated to bring substantial benefits to the community, including improved transaction pricing and the unlocking of new crypto use cases.

As the Atlas upgrade goes live, the Arbitrum network takes a significant leap forward in its ongoing efforts to enhance scalability, reduce costs, and expand the Ethereum blockchain’s capabilities, ensuring a more accessible and efficient platform for the crypto community at large.
